Berlioz, Les nuits d’été
Schumann, Symphony No. 2 in C major, op. 61
The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is the culmination of the dream of an idealist, Claudio Abbado, which came true in 1986 with a youth orchestra made up of musicians from all of Europe. Considered today the ideal base for young talent to have their first orchestral experience, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is a regular guest in festivals such as Lucerne, Salzburg and the BBC Proms, and a large number of its former members are today first musicians in the great European orchestras. The rigorous selection made of the more than 2,000 applicants every year, and the impeccable artistry involved make the orchestra unique in its quality and enthusiasm. Under the baton of Daniel Harding, who needs no introduction, this evening’s programme is an exquisite journey along the road of the music of this continent, including the poetic Nuits d’été by Hector Berlioz in a version made all the more original thanks to the voice of the outstanding baritone Christian Gerhaher.
