Claude Debussy Clair de lune (from Suite Bergamasque)
Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring
Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto in D Minor, op. 47
The Rite of Spring overturned the clichés and refuted the romantic concept of what is “beautiful” and emotional. Written for the Ballets Russes, its premiere in 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris provoked one of the most notorious scandals in the history of music, and the performance didn’t even end.
A year later, its presentation in a concert version without the ballet confirmed that it was one of the most ground-breaking compositions of all time and it still impresses as a colossal orchestral work.
The Orquestra de la Suisse Romande will be responsible for bringing this work, marked by its striking timbral and rhythmic contrasts, to the stage. Under the baton of Jonathan Nott, its conductor since 2017.
In first part of the concert the violinist Midori will perform the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius. Midori, who made her debut at the age of 11 with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, is a visionary artist, a regular guest performer with leading orchestras around the world.
