The Symphonie Fantastique was premiered in 1830. It broke away from many of the musical conventions of the time and is still considered one of the most challenging symphonies to perform. Hector Berlioz was inspired by his own emotional suffering, by an unrequited love that that he was able to reflect in the score and which gives it its backbone and enormous originality.
