Verdi’s thrilling Requiem, performed by the Orchestra of the Liceu under the baton of Josep Pons.
Giuseppe Verdi: Requiem
There are several famous requiems and fortunately they are very different from each other. Verdi's is the requiem of rage, the requiem of genuine anger, a long-needed and long-delayed requiem that, when it finally came to fruition, could not hide his deep suffering and the rejection of death and fate of man.
It should be remembered that Verdi lost two children and his wife before he was thirty. These terrible events would mark him forever in his relationship with death and injustice.
We all know that when faced by the death of our loved ones, the first human reaction is denial and violent rejection. Verdi was undoubtedly a master of the opera because he was also a master of human psychology, which he knew how to portray perfectly. Perhaps this is why Verdi's requiem is the one we best understand, coming closest to how we experience death, with its terrible mixture of anger and hateful resignation.
The Choir and Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, under the baton of Josep Pons, will be charged with bringing the great Italian composer’s finest opera to life. The characters: Death, Anger, Fear, Rage, Prayer, Love, Humility, the Angels, Resignation and the Stars. In two acts.
